June started with the end of the year picnic at Tree Top. Lilly, now the big kid, helped pass out programs and get parents to put on name tags. Greta had her first showing in the program. Which is nice for us, it means we didn't have to rush to Tree Top to get Greta before the program. I was able to stay late at work and get quite a bit of work done and still get there in time to get a decent spot to watch the program from. Unfortunately I didn't get many good photos. Nick came much closer to the 5:00 showtime, so stood off to the side and managed to snag a few photos himself.
It is a potluck picnic, but this year it was quite cold, so eating happened inside. Normally we have to drag the kids home, they are having so much fun playing, but this year because it was cold, it was easy to make it home!
Rain puddles are always a big hit, so after a rain (and during it a bit), we headed out to splash in the puddles.
Our friends Tim and Elizabeth had us and our good friends the Hofstedts over for dinner. We made a giant hopscotch, well over 100. Then later, we went backwards and had it start at -25.
Due to the construction and a late start, we had to go late into the school year. Here are some photos from the end of the year.
The foreign language clubs, mostly the Spanish club, had a multicultural dinner and games night. We went and played games, made crafts, and had tacos.
One of the crafts was making cascarón, eggshells filled with confetti, then covered up with some tissue paper. When we got home, the girls were eager to try them out.
Thursday, June 7th was the kindergarten final program. Each kindergarten classroom had their own little celebration. One of my colleagues covered my final exam in a class so I could go over. Mrs. Gierczic had her students perform a variety of the readers' theatre and other songs they learned throughout the year. Lilly ended up as a soldier at the end. She did a great job performing, saying her lines clearly and with confidence.
We then had cupcakes and Lilly came back to school with me, which made her very happy. (The elementary school ends at 3:00, the high school not until 3:18). Lilly had such an amazing year in kindergarten. She absolutely adores (as do we) Mrs. Gierczic. I don't know if there is a calmer, more patient, and loving teacher out there. Throughout the year she did a great job guiding Lilly and challenging her.
The day after the program was the big field trip. The big, I cannot believe how grown up she is getting moment. The field trip to the Wilderness Walk in Hayward, WI. An hour away. I let my little girl go on a bus an hour away with out me!! She was so very excited and had a wonderful time and asks about every other day when we will get to go back.
That evening, we drove up to Bayfield to visit my cousin Eric and my Aunt Julie, who were tourists in the area. We went out to dinner at Maggie's with them and then went to the Coast Guard Park (probably not the official name, but that is what we call it since it is next to the Coast Guard station).
On Sunday, on a failed attempt to go for a run (I blame donating blood Friday), I did see my colleague. Talking about our plans for the day, she suggested we hike Lost Creek Falls. We had never been and thought why not give it a try. It was a great hike and the girls did amazing. It was 3 miles round trip and Lilly walked a large portion of it and Greta at least half.
After the hike, we stopped for Superman ice cream. Nick attempted to pull Greta's hair back to keep it out of the ice cream.
I will wrap up this post with the last day of school! The elementary school has a giant field day on the last day of school, organized by the gifted and talented coordinator. I ended up bringing some students over to volunteer and they helped out in both the pouring rain and sunshine. It was great because I was able to check on my student volunteers for a bit, then hang out with Lilly's class a bit, then come back to check on my students. Lilly was super excited that I was there and it was fun to participate in her celebration ending her kindergarten year.
The field event Lilly couldn't stop talking about, the toilet plunger relay. They had to carry water in the plunger and dump it into a bucket. Look at that concentration!
Another relay event, the dress your teacher relay. Elementary teachers are such wonderful sports!
Tug of war was not Lilly's favorite. There were tears involved when they were done.
The highlight of the day, usually, is when the fire truck comes and sprays the kids. They were all pretty much soaked because of the downpours, but none the less, the kids jumped in and enjoyed the spray!
After getting wet from the rain and the fire truck, Lilly did some hula hooping and bubble blowing.
It was a fun way to end a great first year of school! Now, on to summer vacation!!
