While it can get quite cold here (cold enough to burst pipes to your downstairs shower, but we won't talk about that), there is lots of fun to be had. Here are some of the fun things we've been doing this winter.
Lilly isn't doing hockey this year but instead is doing Canski, nordic skiing. She absolutely loves it. It is a bit of a rush to get her there - practice starts at 3:30 on Fridays and Nick finishes teaching a little after 3:00. I teach until 3:18, so I can't get her there at all. She's had two practices and both times has stayed after to ski even more (including 6 hill repeats!), so spends over an hour skiing on Fridays. I am nervous but excited, tomorrow I am going to a women's only ski clinic with my friend Elizabeth to get some help with my skiing technique. I can't let Lilly get ahead of me quite yet!
One other fun adventure is going out to the Great Lakes Visitor Center and snowshoeing the trails. Greta wasn't all about it this time around, so Nick stayed inside with her while Lilly and I walked the loop.
When the snow gets wet enough you can build with it. This giant snowman is still hanging out in our backyard, over a month old at this point. We also have constructed in our yard two miniature snowmen, two snow chairs, a snow snail, a small sledding hill, a wall for Humpty Dumpty (who has fallen off many times), and a giant snowball for jumping off of.
We also had a fairly a unique experience. One of Lilly's classmates' families was hosting free sled dog rides. Lilly and I were able to head out on a Saturday and go for a ride. The dogs had run in the Iditarod, which is just a remarkable feat to me. The woman said they will just rest for a few hours at a time until everyone rests for 24 hours. The ride as fun and I was ready for a second loop but Lilly was ready to be done.
Sometimes, it is just too darn cold to play outside. Kids though need a chance to run around, so we take them to Nick's work to run in the open hallways and do shrinky-dinks. Which, apparently, are very exciting.
The problem with the cold is the snow isn't all that much fun. However, there are fun things to do when it warms up a bit.
Nick will drive up to Ashwabay, a ski hill just south of Bayfield to get some good skiing in. There are some bigger hills there and a larger base of snow. Here is a view from the top of the hill.
We also took the girls skiing in town. Greta wasn't so sure the first time we went out but seemed to like it more the second time.

Finally, my ridiculous husband tries to get on the lake all twelve months of the year, but probably averages ten months a year. Now that we have our waterproof camera, he is able to get some pretty amazing photos. Here are some shots from his December paddles (and note that he has ridiculous friends who also bundle up and paddle with him).
