Kindergarten!!!!

Lilly is officially a kindergartener!  We had a late start due to all the construction, but Lilly lucked out and is in one of the new kindergarten classrooms.  Monday afternoon we had a brief meeting with her teacher, Ms. Gierczic (ger-check).  Secretly, she was the teacher I wanted for Lilly.  She is such a kind and warm woman, I knew she'd be a great match for her.  And Lilly already knows her because she teaches kindergarten boot camp in the summer.   After the meeting, Lilly graciously posed for a picture outside the school for me and then went out for ice cream with Dad while I went back to work.

Tuesday was my first day of school.  The new space is amazing and the students love it.  I will snap some photos (I have some but more things have been set up and I'd rather show you the final product - so you will just have to wait).  I was at work when the superintendent and business manager were giving a reporter from the local paper a tour of the renovations and happened to be in the right place at the right time, so made it on the front page of the paper!

Leading up to kindergarten these last few weeks we've had lots of random questions like:
-Will there be nap or quiet time?
-Will I get homework?
-Will I get to check out books from the library?
-What if my teacher is plump?  You know, like fat.  Like Mrs. Gierczic.

Working on her homework - before school even started!

Wednesday morning I stayed home a bit later (with permission from my principal of course) to watch Lilly get on the bus for her first day of school.  She was so excited.  The past week or so she's been waking up before 7, which is totally unusual for her.  This morning she had her backpack on, ready to go by 7:30, begging to go outside and wait for the bus.  The bus doesn't come until 7:55 . . .

Here are the first day of school photos!

Greta also packed a back pack, had a name tag and
had Lilly's lunch number written on it.  She wore it
the entire day at daycare!

I wasn't letting them wait outside yet, so they sat on the porch reading books

The bus (and if you look carefully, street sweeper)
And Greta is not eating the stick

There she goes!  She didn't say goodbye - but then
waved frantically from the window

Our daycare provider dropped her son off and snagged
this photo of Lilly, Alma, and Magda.

I held it together well, my eyes got a little teary but none really fell down my face.  As my colleague pointed out - how great to have her just get on the bus, nervous but confident to do it on her own.  We must have done something right!

When Greta asked where the bus was, we were able to distract her by having her help brush Nick's teeth.  Then I dropped her off - expecting some clinging and tears since she hasn't ever really been to Tree Top without her sister (and her usual teacher is off on her honeymoon starting today!) but she walked in, took her shoes off, and went right to the table to finish her goldfish crackers.  No goodbye.

We had so many questions about her day when I picked her up from daycare (she's going there after school, riding a different bus there).  The first thing she told me- she didn't get sent to the principal's office even once.  Theresa (daycare provider) went to meet them at the bus stop and showed me video of them getting off the bus.  Not a single one said hello to her, they all just got off the bus and ran right on past on their way to Tree Top.  It was pretty funny!

Slowly different aspects of her day came out, but it sounds like she had a really great first day.  They played outside on the playground, had gym and music.  Ms. Gierczic uses an app called Seesaw to share what they did in school that day, so it was fun to flip through some photos of the day.  One included a photo of the students in the class writing their names on a piece of paper:

There is Lilly Kuchta Robertson taking up the entire top of the paper . . .

Her favorite part of the day was riding the bus.  There was nothing she didn't like about her day. She asked a girl if she wanted to be her friend but according to Lilly, "She didn't answer because she was feeling pretty shy."  She doesn't really know anyone in her class.

We went out to dinner to celebrate the first day of school.  The girls were both very tired, so hopefully they sleep soundly and well!  I can't believe Lilly is a kindergartener - and in the graduating class of 2030!!!
