Mother's Day we went for a hike. We've done a few trips to Houghton Falls already this spring, so we decided to try a new hike, The Brownstone Trail in Bayfield, WI. It was quite a lengthy hike, we just did a portion of it and went to the awesome Coast Guard park (not the official name but it is next to the Coast Guard station in Bayfield). But that is all I can remember at this point.
Father's Day is much more recent, so I remember it more clearly. I'll start with Saturday, a day of storms coming and going and girls who really wanted to go to the beach and the Lake Park, Greta's favorite place. I was a little tired of the Lake Park, so we went to Washburn to their lake park, West End Park.
The girls spent some time wading in the water, and impressively kept their clothes dry. Despite the fact that the water was freezing cold, Lilly was itching for more.
Lilly has been having moments where she forgets she is safety conscious and is starting to take more risks. At the park she decided to run and jump off part of the playground equipment to see just how far she could jump.
I love these two at the end in particular:
Lilly really wanted to go back to the beach after Greta's nap, but thunderstorms kept popping up. We decided we'd risk it and head up to Bayview Beach and keep an eye on the radar and the sky. The storms brought down the temperature, leaving it at a balmy 65 degrees. I don't know how cold the water was further up north than in Washburn that morning, but it was super, super, super cold. My feet were freezing just standing in the water for a few seconds. That didn't stop Lilly. Nick also took the time to step on his paddle board and paddle on the water. Lilly joined him. Greta, the wise girl she is, wouldn't put on her swimsuit and stayed away from the water, but did want a ride on the paddle board.
While no storms came, we headed back to the van and headed into Bayfield to have dinner at Ethel's, one of our favorite restaurants to celebrate Father's Day. We are super sad this great place is closed in the winter, it would be awesome to be able to eat their delicious food in winter without all the tourists around, but alas, we just have to go and dine with the tourists.
For Father's Day, Lilly woke up at 6:50 but lovingly hung out in her room, reading to herself and listening to audiobook. At 7:30 she came back to our room, asking if it was finally time to go downstairs. Greta woke up then as well, so we headed downstairs and made pancakes for dad.
It was a rainy-ish day, so we had a quiet morning inside. Greta rediscovered the dinosaur toys that roar and have lights that flash and was quite frightened by them. Lilly was then determined to play with them, so Greta and I ran some errands while Nick and Lilly played fighting dinosaurs for the entire time we were gone.
Greta had a failed nap, spent a good time talking, singing, and crying. Nick received a kit for making a fuel cell out of mud, so Lilly and Nick worked on that until we decided Greta was not going to fall asleep. The two got the fuel cell built, now we wait for the bacteria to eat enough to start making the energy to make the little light diode flash.
After that we packed up and headed to Maslowski Beach here in Ashland for Nick to paddle and the girls to play on the playground and wade in the water.
Lilly took quite a spill off a piece of playground equipment, luckily right as Nick was paddling back to shore. She got a few scratches on her face and a little bump on her head but eventually pulled it together.
Before and after dinner the girls played awesomely together, dressing up in the dress clothes and just being goofy. Nick and I were able to stay at the table and just watch the silliness.
All in all, it was a great Mother's Day and a great Father's Day weekend.
