Lilly has been excited for Halloween for weeks. She is upset with me for how few Halloween decorations we have. I just don't have the "decorating spirit" and want a bunch of plastic light up things in my house. And I don't want to have to store them or hold on to them for future years. Window clings were as festive as we got, along with some witch crafts that Dianne brought with her when she visited a few weeks ago. However, Lilly has been entertained by all the Halloween decorations up around town, so at least she's not totally deprived. And our neighbors have a nice display, so she's got that too.
The Halloween fun started on Friday night. The high school hockey team held their second annual "Glow Docker 5K," a run (not a timed race) and walk to raise money to cover travel costs. (Being a medium-sized city in an area of unlimited small towns, our sports teams have to travel hours to get somewhere to find an opponent in the same division). I was looking forward to the run, it is at night, runners get glow necklaces, the path is lit up with pumpkins and luminaries.
The girls had a blast with the glow necklaces and the very obnoxious flashing rings. The loop was three laps around the trail around the high school tennis court, soccer fields, and practice football field. It was fun to see my family cheering me on at the end of each lap. And I ran my fastest 5K ever, 27:27 (it was a little less than 3 miles but my pace was still a 9:15/mile).
Saturday morning Nick stayed home while Lilly, Greta, and I went to the Bretting Center for the Ashland Parks and Rec and Chequamegon Food Co-Op Halloween Party. They had games in the gym, snacks and pumpkin painting in the community room. We didn't make it past the snacks and the pumpkin painting. We had a busy morning, needing to go to story time at the library with Granny Goose. Lilly had a lot of fun painting her pumpkin, Greta painted a tiny pumpkin, and they both really liked the chocolate chip cookie. The owl costumes are from my friend Emily, she made them for her own children a few years ago. She was kind enough to mail them to us to use for Halloween.
After the fun trips Saturday morning, we came home and shortly thereafter Grandma and Grandpa Robertson came to visit. After feeding everyone lunch, Nick and I left to go in to work (because we are that cool) and then we did go out to dinner just the two of us. It was pretty remarkable to have uninterrupted conversations that actually had a beginning, middle, and end.
Sunday morning I went for a run with my friend, then we packed up and headed to hike the Free Woods (Houghton Falls). Tim and Dianne have never been there and have wanted to see it for awhile. We followed that with the traditional lunch at Co-Cos.
At the end of lunch, there was a gas tank truck at the gas station across the street from CoCo's. Greta was thrilled. Unbelievably thrilled. She couldn't have been more enthusiastic. The women sitting across from us at lunch were very entertained by her excitement. She was not thrilled to be put back in her carseat to head home and no longer see the tanker truck.
That evening we carved pumpkins. When Lilly was about Greta's age and we tried carving pumpkins, Lilly was very distraught. She wanted us to put all the pumpkin guts back into the pumpkin. Greta did not have the same reaction. She sat cross legged and watched for awhile while I scooped the guts out, Lilly drew the face on the pumpkins they had painted earlier in the week, and I cut out the face. The entire time, Lilly listening to the audiobook Dogs in the Dead of Night.
Lilly also drew this awesome card for my brother, his birthday is on Halloween.
Finally, Halloween Day!! Lilly has been counting down the days for the Tree Top Halloween Party. Man alive, giving ice cream and punch to 2-5 year olds mid-morning, having fun, playing games, to then still be with them all afternoon - I give so much credit to daycare providers. That sounds like a horrendous experience to me. Oh, and they all were in costume too . . .
We sent Lilly's costume with her (Owl Princess) and sent Greta in her costume - Boo from Monsters Inc.
We were out longer than anticipated. Our original plan involved hitting up some of the houses in our neighborhood, but there weren't many lights on in our block. So we went to the one and I attempted to take a photo of the girls on the front steps but it was too dark.

This costume was a bit too chilly to go trick-or-treating in, so we had her wear the owl costume for candy gathering, but it was unseasonably warm. Quite delightful weather, actually. We met up with our friends the Hofstedts again, this time met at their house, rather than trying to wander around the busiest part of town and find one another.
Lilly was super excited to hand out candy to a few more families that stopped by, eagerly running to the door each time the doorbell rang (all three times).
Since this photo was a bust, I tried a few times during the week to convince Lilly to get her costume back on for a photo with Greta but it didn't happen until Friday night (one reason this blog post is so much later than Halloween night). But I got a few good ones tonight - just as owls and not with the cool shirts that went with the owl costumes, or the boots Greta was wearing, or Lilly's princess dress.
Thank you again, Emily for loaning us the great costumes! It was a fun Halloween, and as Lilly told me Halloween night when I was putting her to bed, "Now it is time to start thinking about Thanksgiving."
