Visitors, Visitors, Visitors! (Part I)

It has been the Robertson Hotel the past few weeks.  We've had lots of company, which is great since Greta doesn't travel well, so we appreciate people coming to us instead of us traveling to them.

Our biggest guest weekend was the last weekend in July.  My parents always go with a group of their friends up to Bayfield for a golf outing/exploring Bayfield weekend at the end of July.  My grandma came along this time for the trip, so my mom and grandma swung by our house for a few hours midday Friday on their way up to Bayfield.

Also coming up for the weekend, Sam and Suzy.  They arrived shortly after my mom and grandma.  Nick swung home for lunch, bringing sandwich fixings with him.  We had lunch together and had some nice conversation.

Unfortunately, our visit wasn't as long or as fun as it could have been, since Greta had a doctor's appointment.  Thursday morning she woke up and had a rash from head to toe (but no fever).  We talked briefly with the doctor's nurse and since she had no fever, she said to give it 24 hours and see.  We called back Friday morning since the rash was still there and was seeming to be worse.  Her usual doctor actually had an appointment, so I had to bring her in mid-afternoon, missing some nice conversation with my family and I had to wake Greta up from a nap.  Turns out the poor girl had strep!

But, while I was with Greta at the doctor, Lilly played with my mom and grandma and with Sam and Suzy.  Free babysitting.  And four babysitters.

Puzzle complete!

After we walked to the pharmacy to pick up Greta's prescription (and get a free thermometer that woofs when it is done taking your temperature), my mom and grandma headed up to Bayfield to meet the rest of the golfers and adventurers.

Besides coming to visit us, Sam and Suzy were also coming up to help with yard work.  Originally, they were going to help Nick build his kayak, but since that is years away from getting done, he traded it in for yard work.  The task for the weekend:  tackle the weed mess behind the garage and plant grass seed.  They made quick work of it and turned a weeded disaster (I have no before photo, I apologize) into this first:

They later tilled it and cleaned it up even more, so on Sunday Nick and Lilly could sprinkle the grass seed:

In the afternoon, Lilly had a water balloon "fight"/toss with Sam and Suzy.

They tried hitting the paddle board with their balloons

Lilly also dressed up like a monkey and rode her bike for a bit.

After a dinner of grilled veggie brats and vegetables, Nick brought Greta upstairs for bed, while Lilly (still dressed as a monkey), Sam, Suzy, and I walked to Dairy Queen and then the ore dock (the tradition now with guests, apparently).  They treated Lilly to a Dilly Bar as a thank you for being their flower girl.

Saturday morning we headed out to the Bakery, Co-op, and Farmer's Market.  Greta was a terrible sleeper (perhaps having company irritated her, more than likely her strep throat) but Lilly did pretty well sleeping in our room in her reading tent.  Greta fell asleep on the way to the Farmer's Market and slept for nearly an hour and a half in her stroller.  Remarkable in many ways - she never sleeps in her stroller, she doesn't take morning naps, and she rarely sleeps that long during a regular nap!  Lilly wore her Elsa dress out and about and on our way back toward home, we played some at the purple park.

Still constructing the road.  Nick appreciated being able to take Greta
to the park in the morning (she was up really early) and have her watch the
construction equipment- because he got to too!

Hiding!

We headed back home and decided to go to the beach for the afternoon.  We packed up, sun screened up, and headed up to Bayview Beach south of Bayfield, our go to beach.  All the grown ups got to paddle and the kids had fun at the beach and Lilly in the water.  It was a bit wavy, but safe enough for paddling.  Lilly was a little nervous about the waves at first and then went right in.

Greta kept her distance from the water, however.

Rarely do I actually appear on the blog, but Nick took some photos

On our way home we stopped at Tetzner's Farm to buy ice cream sandwiches (honor system, come in, leave cash or check in an envelope where you write down what you are taking, and walk out with your goods).  We ate them in the car on the ride to the grocery store to buy yeast for grilling pizzas.

As the day progressed, Sam and Suzy started to notice that when we are out and about, we run into a lot of people that we know.  It eventually became very entertaining to them.   They just dropped me off in front of the grocery store so I could run in and buy the yeast and I said hello to a woman on my way in.  Sam and Suzy heard and had a nice chuckle in the back seat.  I guess we've gotten used to the idea that we run into people we know all around town and don't think anything of it.

We grilled pizza that night, Lilly rode her bike up and down the driveway and sidewalk, biking to and from school.  Sam and Suzy were her parents, I was her aunt.

Sunday morning Sam, Suzy, and Nick woke up early and went paddling along the shore in Washburn, checking out some neat little caves.  The girls and I hung out at home for awhile (I think they slept in some) and then we met them at the Blue Wave for breakfast.  The meal took a very long time to get to us, but once we finally got it, it was delicious and we enjoyed every morsel.  Lilly had great fun playing in the artesian well with Sam and Suzy.  They humored her, which was great.

While we were eating, we noticed something scurrying on shore.  Some kind of mammal, an otter or muskrat, was dashing on shore, and then back into the water.  Later we heard someone say it was an otter and it was up on these rocks by the restaurant.  We were all disappointed not to see it again.

After our late brunch, Sam and Suzy packed up and headed back toward home.  It was amazing having them visit - they did dishes, watched and played with Lilly and Greta, cleaned up our yard, and were generally fabulous guests.

Sunday afternoon we went to the park and then evening we let the girls have ice cream cones.

Unfortunately, Lilly asked me once and then again asked Nick if this was the season for sore throats.  Ugh.  Her throat hurt.  Nick had her open up Sunday night as he was putting her to bed and bam - bright red with white spots.  Some miscommunication with the nurses and such but Tuesday late afternoon Lilly got her prescription for antibiotic and was on the mend.  We knew she wasn't feeling well when she literally fell asleep at the table at her afternoon snack.

AND you'd think that would be the end of this post - but no.  On Wednesday, Nick's Uncle Dan and Aunt Lynn came to visit us.  They drove up to Cornucopia, WI (pretty much as far north as you can get in WI) and did a kayak tour of the sea caves up there (I strongly recommend checking these out - they are amazing) and then came back to Ashland to take us out to dinner, so we could take them out to Dairy Queen (and, you guessed it, go to the ore dock).  It was a brief visit, but we had a great time and fantastic conversation.

Stay tuned for reports of even more visitors! (This will be a four part series)
