Fossil Hunting

Lilly participated in a Parks and Rec program, Silly Science.  Nick took her to her final class on Tuesday.  They were digging up fossils (pieces of paper) and taping them together in the shape of a dinosaur.  This inspired Nick to take it up a notch and make a dinosaur out of PVC for Lilly to dig up out of the sandbox and then put together.

Today Nick took Greta, and then Lilly, to the hardware stores to gather the necessary supplies.  Nick cut up the PVC pipe, assembled it into a dinosaur, then took it apart, buried it in the sandbox, and let Lilly find the 12 pieces (that he very smartly took a picture of before burying so when we struggled to find that twelfth piece we knew exactly what we were digging for).

got a little too boring

We took a snack break part way through and Lilly said, "All fossil hunters need snacks."

Partway through the adventure Lilly said, "we are scientist-es right now!"

We all had a good time with the project and it killed much of the afternoon.  And, it was a beautiful afternoon, nice and cool so we weren't sweating to death while we put it together.

Giving it a bath before it went to the museum

Lilly asked if she could bring it inside.  We agreed once we saw that the sand had really been washed off when Greta and Lilly gave it a bath in the pool.  Later I went to grab a blanket off the laundry basket and in the basket, Lilly had tucked in the dinosaur.

(Greta played in the sandbox for most of the time.  She was super frustrated by the walrus mold, she could fill it up, but couldn't flip it over without losing all her sand.  She kept trying and trying, which was great to see her persistence.)
