Greta and Lilly were both wrapping up a round of antibiotic for ear infections. Sunday was going to be the last day for them. Well, it was the last day for Lilly, Saturday ended up being Greta's last day. Why end early? Well, here's why:

This picture doesn't do it justice - bright red, nearly swollen shut

Friday and Saturday we noticed a few little rash spots on her back and by her neck. We didn't think anything of it except to keep an eye on it. Saturday night was a very rough night of sleep (or really, a lack there of). Sunday morning we woke up, I fed Greta in the dark to help keep her focused and when I turned on the lamp, I was greeted by the red, swollen face. And noticed the rash all over her body. I woke up Nick, we snapped some photos, sent them to his parents and allergic reaction to amoxicillin was the diagnosis. We waited until 10:00 for the urgent care to open and I brought her in. We waited for much longer than I thought we should for a Sunday morning in a small town but it is what it is. The doctor (the mom to a student and former student of mine) diagnosed the amoxicillin allergy, and said Benadryl every 6 hours until the hives go away. The nurse (the father of a former student of mine) came and made Greta very angry as he tried to give her Benadryl. Together we managed to get some down. I had to work hard to calm her down (which included turning off the lights in the room we were in) but eventually I got her to sleep a bit in my arms.

Monday's version
We sent her to day care on Monday, she was not her happy self and ended up having a fever of 101 that afternoon. Nick went and picked her up, I found a teacher to cover my class and I went home. Nick then picked Lilly up to bring her to the dentist. Meanwhile I waited for a return phone call from the doctor's office to see what we should do. She suggested we go back to urgent care since she had new hives, they didn't seem much better, had the fever and her hands and feet were swollen. The ER doc said same thing - allergy to amoxicillin, but it could be a reaction to the virus that caused the ear infection in the first place.

Tuesday's hands
Nick stayed home with Greta on Tuesday, she didn't really have a fever but was not a happy baby (and she usually is very happy). She didn't let him put her down or stray far from her at all the entire day. So Tuesday night I spent 45 minutes making sub plans, tweaking an assignment just in case, but she had a better night of sleep (sort of - she slept from 8-3:30 but was up from 3:30-5:00 or so). Wednesday morning though everything had faded, no real new spots to speak of, and the swelling was down substantially on her hands. So, we're pretty much back to our happy baby. Always an adventure with kids!
And, here's Lilly's drawing of Greta from Tuesday:
