What is a calm evening?

Wednesday was my last day of school.  We had plans of going out to dinner that evening to celebrate.  One thing got in our way and then the rest of our evening just spiraled.

1. During the day, Xcel (our energy provider) was replacing the gas line to our house.  This meant digging a hole in the alley, accessing the main line, replacing the line in the yard by threading it to the house, and then filling the hole back up.  While filling the hole back up, the man hit the valve for our house connected to the main line, which meant it had to be repaired.  It also meant that gas was escaping, so a fire truck full of foam and ambulance had to come.  The workers had to put on fire suits and respirators.  Firemen were in the driveway ready to spray the foam into the hole if necessary.  I was still at work when this excitement happened, Nick watched the excitement from inside with Greta.

What does that have to do with going out to dinner?  Well, their trucks were blocking our driveway, which meant the minivan was stuck in the garage (or the stable according to Lilly).  The minivan is the only car with Greta's carseat, so no out do dinner for us.

It took them until about 8:30 to fix it and finish and fill the hole back up.

Lilly was of course enthralled with the operation, so we ate dinner on the deck (take-out Chinese food) so we could watch.  She was also very concerned about the giant hole in the alley, did not particularly want it and wanted them to fix it right away.

2. Nick had to go into work to check on things and needed to return the movie Cinderella to the library, which was quite overdue.  He was also going to pick up dinner.  Greta needed to eat.  Unfortunately for all of us, Greta has sometimes decided to scream while she is nursing, or will not nurse and just scream when I try to feed her.  Nick was going to take Lilly with him so I could just focus on dealing with Greta.  Lilly was not interested and while I was upstairs with a screaming child, Nick was downstairs with a temperamental child.  He was eventually victorious and convinced her to go with him.

3. Lilly had a bug bite on her wrist.  It was very swollen and very red.  It also looked more like a blister than just a bug bite bump.  The swelling also seemed to be getting worse as the evening progressed.  Nick called his mom to see if she thought we should go in to urgent care or give it a day. It was decided she needed to go in, so Nick took her.
The green lines helped us to see that it was getting bigger.

She cried when they went in because they weren't going in to the regular clinic doors and that she wasn't going to see Dr Gang (she adores her regular doctor) but gathered her courage and did a great job.  The doctor she saw is the dad of one of the kids at her day care, so that helped matters too.  Nothing to worry about though, just some ibuprofen, cover it with a bandaid to keep her from scratching it, and keep an eye on it because it might get infected.  She came home with six star stickers.  One went on her dress (making her the star of the day) and the other five went into the fridge.  Yup, we currently have five star stickers in our refrigerator.

Then it was time for bed time snack and bed.  At this point the Xcel workers were filling up the hole, so while she was brushing her teeth, we watched them fill up the hole.  Getting her to go to bed at this point was tricky, for a toddler who hates going to bed, anything is better than going to bed.  And a digger filling up a giant hole in the alley?  Biggest reason not to go to bed ever.

and the final wrench in the evening . . .
4. I lost my cell phone.  Wondering where it was hung over my head all evening.  So between dealing with a screaming baby and a tricky toddler with a sketchy looking bug bite, I had the stress of wondering where my phone was.  I convinced myself it fell out of my workbag at school, so at ten o'clock I left Nick in charge of two girls and went to my classroom to find my phone.  No luck.  Twenty-four hours later, I still do not know where my phone is.  We've scoured the house and called it repeatedly and still it hasn't shown up.  Here's hoping this weekend when we really clean the house it will show up.  Nick has hope it will show up, I am fairly skeptical.

We were able to survive the evening though, both girls fed and in bed asleep.  Lilly's wrist is pretty much back to normal, the gas line repaired and they've successfully done two more in our alley this week, and now it is the weekend.
