We're always a bit leery to leave the house with a baby. I know there are families that just pick up the baby and go with whatever. I assume these are families that have fairly mellow, calm babies that can sleep any where, any time. We don't produce that variety of baby here. The babies in our family are babies that fight sleep. Greta isn't the prize fighter Lilly was (is), so we thought we'd risk taking her out on a hike last weekend. This was the hike we contemplated walking on Mother's Day and did for my first two Mother's Days.
Greta and Lilly both did awesome in the twenty-five minute car ride to Houghton Falls. Lilly pretended to watch
Frozen on her TV (a rock) and would sing occasionally. Greta (if Lilly is to be believed) was awake for most of the drive, just checking things out and eventually fell asleep. We arrived at the parking lot, strapped Greta into the front carrier and Lilly into the hiking backpack carrier. A few steps into the trail, Lilly wanted out so she could walk. We obliged but let her know she wasn't going to get in and out repeatedly, now that she was out, she was walking for awhile. She rocked it and walked/ran the entire mile to the end of the trail. I think a highlight for Lilly was getting to pee in the woods.

We made Lilly ride in the carrier for awhile on the way back, she probably walked the last 1/3 of a mile. She wanted to walk for more of it, but the mosquitos were quite bad and we needed to get home for Greta to eat and we wanted to pick up sandwiches on the way home.
Nick ran into Coco's Bakery in Washburn on the way home and picked up sandwiches for us. Lilly ate vegetables out of my hummus sandwich. Nearly out of Washburn, Greta started to cry. As we were on the highway heading toward Ashland, Greta started to scream. The girl was hungry and she really wanted us to know she was unhappy with the current situation. However, we made it home, Greta was fed, and there was peace in our lives again.
