The past few nights Lilly has asked if she wakes up if she'll be three, so we've shown her calendars and counted down how many days until her actual birthday. We've made plans and asked her what she wanted to do for her birthday and she wanted to go out to dinner with Tim and Elizabeth.
Lilly woke up this morning a little uneasy and groggy. This morning she informed me that she didn't want to be three today. When I told her that we had a special plate waiting for her for breakfast, she changed her mind and was, "a little bit three." She also asked me if Tim and Elizabeth were downstairs, so I let her know that they weren't coming until dinner. Later I mentioned that Tim (a pilot) was stuck in the Twin Cities and he may not be able to make it. She said, "I want Elizabeth to drive carefully. I don't want her to get stuck in the snow." I feebly attempted to tell a newly-minted "little bit three-year-old" about Tim flying up from the Twin Cities to Duluth and his plane being full . . . luckily she lost interest in my explanation quickly. And also fortunately Tim was able to get on a plane this morning and drive over from Duluth.
Nick's oldest brother Ben and his wife celebrate their children's birthdays by putting up paper with their birthday age all over the house. His kids love it and we figured we'd adopt the practice. I mentioned this to a couple of students and they volunteered to make number threes for me. One of them showed up on Monday with about 30 of them. Lilly was super stoked to see them this morning and every time she saw another one, "Mom! There's one on the (fill in the blank with location)!".
Growing up we ate on the red you are special today plate and my mom passed the plate on to us. Lilly ate her breakfast off the plate. One pancake and she didn't even eat very much of it.
After eating some of her pancake she opened one present, the basketball hoop from us.
She watched an episode of Clifford while we rushed to get ready and all three of us piled into the van. Nick and Lilly dropped me off at work and then Nick brought Lilly to Tree Top for her birthday celebration. Lilly brought in chocolate chip cookies to share, her teacher made her a birthday hat with a Zamboni on it, and every kid in the day care drew her a picture that they assembled into a little book. A really fun idea and it is neat to see all the different ideas they came up with.
We both picked her up and she came running to us, showing us all the different things she had in her cubby - the hat, the book, a drawing she made, and her butterfly net, the toy she chose from the birthday bin. A quick trip home to assemble her basketball hoop, open more presents, and a quick phone call with Great Grandma Phyllis (with whom Lilly had a great conversation - I was so pleased she talked to my Grandma on speaker phone!).
Off to dinner at The Alley, Lilly's second favorite restaurant. Her first choice was DaLou's, but they are closed for a month so we suggested The Alley and she was okay with that. When we arrived there, meeting Tim and Elizabeth, we found out they were holding a fundraiser for the Chequamegon Humane Association and it was only the pizza buffet. However, the restaurant was still available for anyone to eat, so we trekked upstairs and had pizza buffet for dinner and supported the Humane Association. Thankfully pizza is what Lilly said she wanted for dinner. While waiting for pizza and the rest of us to finish eating, Lilly played with the new dot-markers and coloring books from my grandma.
After dinner we went back to our house for cupcakes and playing with the new basketball hoop. While we were out to dinner and having cupcakes and getting ready for bed, many people tried to call Lilly, FaceTime with her, and send her well-wishes. We're looking forward to catching up with all these loving family members later this week.
Nick told her to make a wish, and it sounds like she wished for a cupcake. Good choice kiddo.
After cupcake we let her play for a little bit more. The biggest present hit was not the basketball hoop, the books, the reusable sticker book, or the presents from my grandma, but the $1 butterfly net from day care.
This birthday was just a blast, her first where she really seemed to get that it was a special day for her, she was a year older, etc. It took her forever to fall asleep (not that she falls asleep quickly any night but today she was singing and chatting lots more than usual) but knock on wood, the excitement finally wore off and she fell asleep. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
