We've been slowly but surely making progress on the potty training front with Lilly. It has been slow going, partially because we weren't as consistent as we should have been and partially because Lilly was really not at all interested. Wet diapers didn't bother her, so why stop playing if she can just pee and play at the same time? I Googled "potty training a stubborn child" and the idea of a potty timer came up. Genius. This worked really well. If we would ask Lilly if she needed to go to the bathroom or ask her to go, we would always be met with a resounding no. The timer beeps, no matter what she was doing she would leap up and dash to the bathroom. We also had much more luck with her just wearing underwear than pull ups. So the last week Lilly has made some great progress. Such progress that she's even made outings wearing underwear . . . . which leads me to the title of this post.
On Tuesday evening we went to the high school boys JV basketball game. During the second half, Lilly had to go potty, so we beelined it to the bathroom. The bathroom has automatic flushing toilets. Lilly went to the bathroom and was dazzled by the toilet flushing by itself. Then she had the pleasure of washing her hands in the automatic sink. As soon as we got back to the game, Lilly leaned over and said, "Mommy, I have to go potty." Sure kid, sure you do. When I told her she just wanted to see the automatic flushing toilets again, she giggled and nodded yes. Basketball game or toilet . . . . tough call.
When we picked her up from day care on Friday, she was very proud because she had made it the entire day without an accident (the first day all week). As we were driving to the Northland women's basketball game that night, Lilly asked if Daddy's work had potties. Nick asked if she had to go and she said, yes, she had that funny feeling (another literary allusion - Time to Pee by Mo Willems has the line, "if you have that funny feeling"). She managed to hold it until the bathroom. Partway through the game I was told that she had to go to the bathroom again. She didn't really, but at this stage in the game, we're not taking risks.
Today we really tested the limits of her potty prowess - we went to two hockey games and a basketball game. As soon as we were at the hockey game I reminded her to tell me if she had that funny feeling. Not two seconds later, "Mommy, I have to go potty." So we went. She didn't actually have to go, but again, we're not taking any risks. During the hockey games I think we made four bogus runs and two real trips. The basketball game was two bogus runs. Lilly seems to just like checking out the various public restrooms in Ashland.
Side story - at the Northland hockey game this afternoon, Lilly turned into a journalist (or perhaps a statistician). She had a paper and pen and was "writing" down notes. She wrote down, the goalie fell down twenty times.
Here's another photo just since this is a wordy post - Lilly checking out the sea monster eat. We've lost all the other aquatic creatures that were living in the tank and are down to one triop. It is super cool to see that thing eat.
