Snow Day #1

My wish/non-wish came true and was abruptly awoken at 6 AM with the snow day phone call.  I promptly turned off my alarm clock and went back to sleep.  Northland also closed today, so we all slept in.  Lilly woke up at 7:35 and I was still really tired, so I went into her room, hoping I could convince her to sleep for a bit longer.  Her first concern was that the snow had melted (which was also her concern at 4AM when I went in her room to cover her back up), so I let her look out the window.  The girl was very excited it was still there.  Then I asked her if she would stay in her room and read books while mom slept for ten more minutes.  She was completely okay with this plan and really did stay quietly reading in her room for 9 minutes and 20 seconds before she started asking for me again (I had set a timer for ten minutes).  This is not the first time this has happened and we know how lucky we are that 1. we have a girl who sleeps past 7 regularly and 2. that we have a daughter who will "read" books to herself for ten minutes while we sleep a bit more.

We came down, watched a bit of Curious George and then woke Nick up for pancakes (zapping leftover ones).  Immediately after having pancakes Lilly wanted to go outside, so the two of us bundled up and headed out into the snowy world.

Watching the snow blower next door
We came in when she face planted in the snow after jumping off a giant pile of snow.  Nick made his way outside to snow blow with promises to play with Lilly outside once he was done, as long as he wasn't too cold.  So Lilly and I played inside where it was warm until we re-bundled her and the two of them played outside.

After lunch and a nap, Lilly played construction worker while I folded laundry (my main goal for the day was to get laundry taken care of - I folded two loads but that was the only productive thing I did outside of make dinner and do dishes).

Then back outside, this time in her snowsuit, to play some more.  This time we took the sled out and I pulled her around the yard a bit, she went down her slide, we drew snowmen because the snow isn't wet enough, threw snowballs at the house, and all sorts of other fun adventures.  I brought in a little girl who was not ready to come inside, but I certainly was cold enough!

She did this a few times, it had to be so cold!
Nick was at work from lunch until about 4:30, so Lilly and I were flying solo in the afternoon.  After some hot chocolate and gluing cotton balls to paper to make our own snowmen, it apparently was time for dress up.  And despite it being freezing cold, Lilly still wanted to be a naked mole rat.  First she was a butterfly (and I was the mama butterfly) and would fly around the house looking for flowers.

Then she turned into a ballerina when Nick came home (and I was the mama ballerina and he was the daddy ballerina).  I didn't catch any of her sweet dance moves in her new play room (which is fantastic - a big open space for her to run around in and comfortable for us too) but here's one blurry picture.

While it was not a productive snow day, it certainly was a fun one.   And a nice break from school - I haven't had a day off since school started and I have parent/teacher conferences on Thursday, so will be at work from 8-7, so being home today was a nice treat.  I will probably not be saying that come June 16th when we are still in school, when we were supposed to be done June 10th.

Nick read my blog post yesterday and let me know that winds actually were gusting upwards of 37 mph, not the 17 I had mentioned (I just used what weather.com said the winds were supposed to be).  Total snow accumulation for the storm estimate is 12-14 inches of snow.  We take our winters seriously up her in the Northwoods.
