Halloween 2014

*Update*  Our final trick-or-treat house was one of Nick's colleagues.  Her husband snapped these two photos for us.

Sunday, October 26th we went to the second annual Haunted Trail at Northland.  Admission is a few canned goods.  They have the friendly version from 5:30-6:30 and the really spooky version after that.  Lilly talked a big game going into the haunted trail and quickly went to Nick's arms for the remainder of the trail.  Like last year, the college students did a great job of not actually being scary once they sensed Lilly's anxiousness.  At the end of the trail a witch met us and brought us to the fire pit where we roasted s'mores.  Lilly did not want to eat it as a s'more, but ate each ingredient individually.

Then on Thursday Lilly had her Halloween party at Tree Top and that evening "we" carved a pumpkin.  Lilly scribbled all over it with marker and crayon, told me what the face should look like (happy and sad), and when it was time to scoop it out, she was all done.  But once the jack-o-lantern was finished and a candle in it, we sang happy birthday to the pumpkin a handful of times, blew out the candle a handful of times, and I was applauded for doing a great job blowing it out  Go me.

Then the big night, Halloween on Friday.  I have been asking her for the last few weeks what she wanted to be and she often told me, "a monkey dog."  See, she has two hand-me-down costumes, a dog one and a monkey one.  Apparently she couldn't decide, so she became a monkey dog.

Our plan was our usual Halloween plan, stop at the houses of a few people we know, see the chaos of the blocked off street Chapple, and then go home.  But this year Lilly wanted to actually do some trick-or-treating, so we were out for a long time.  The first few houses she was very nervous for, she wouldn't hold out her treat bag, wouldn't say anything except thank you in a completely inaudible voice.  But after a few houses and the realization that people really did give her candy, she was much more enthusiastic.  After each house she'd ask us, "another house?" so we'd move on to the next house.

On the first street we ran into our friends and their three kids, the youngest Alma is one of Lilly's friends.  I ran into Brandon and Alma today and he said Alma outlasted all the other older kids in her enthusiasm for the trick-or-treating.

One of her friends from day care lives on Chapple, and we stopped in to say hi, which was adorable, watching two kids super excited to see one another, but then not interact really at all.  And it was nice to be inside where it was warm for a few minutes!

The big disappointment for the evening was when Lilly and I both stepped into a deep, stinky puddle on our way to go across the street.  Lilly's feet, costume leg and candy bag were soaked, my pants were drenched and did I mention the puddle was stinky?  So we headed back to the car, but Lilly kept telling us she wasn't cold, so we let her trick-or-treat at the houses along the way back to our car.  It was a cold night too - in the low 30s, so not a great night to have soaking wet feet.  But she was dedicated to trick-or-treating, that little monkey dog.

I'll end this post with two videos, Lilly reciting "Five Little Pumpkins" very dramatically and singing a song my mom sang to her maybe five times while we were in Eau Claire last weekend.
