Ah, trying to decipher what a two year old says is not always easy. Today at pick up, Theresa mentioned that yesterday Lilly's regular teacher forgot to mention that Lilly just broke out sobbing uncontrollably at one point and she could not figure out what was wrong with her. When she asked Lilly about it later, she started crying again, but it sounded like there was a bug in her nose.
Lilly and I got home and as we were getting out of the car I asked Lilly what made her cry at Tree Top yesterday. She said, "I had a bee in my nose" or that is what I heard at first. Not satisfied with my follow up questions (like a bee that goes buzz?), she clarified, "I had a bead in my nose." Wait - a what in your nose? A bead?! So I asked more follow up questions and Lilly informed me that she had a bead in her nose but daddy got it out this morning at breakfast. It was a big deal. Yup, she told me getting it out was a big deal. My curiosity was piqued, for Nick had not mentioned to me that before he dropped her off he removed a BEAD from her NOSE. My follow up question - it was a big deal so you cried? Lilly said, no, I giggled.
Nick called about a question for the grocery list, so I casually mentioned the above conversation. He did not remove a bead from her nose, much like I had suspected. I was not particularly worried because she was breathing just fine and didn't seem too particularly upset about things at this point. When Nick came home, I retold the story and he said she mentioned something this morning but he couldn't quite figure out what it was that she was saying. And as I thought about it, she did mention having something in her nose last night while we were at swimming lessons, but I assumed she was talking about a booger in her nose. Here's this poor girl trying four different times to tell us she had a bead in her nose and we just weren't picking up on it at all.
Nick grabbed the flashlight, peeked in her nose and yup - there it was, a pink plastic bead used in making necklaces and bracelets. So off to urgent care, for now it was 4:55, so the regular doctor's office was closed.
Lilly did a fantastic job and we were reminded of one of the perks of living in a small town - no lines! We got there and as soon as we sat down after registering they called us back. A very nice nurse took Lilly's vitals and lead us back to wait for the doctor. Very soon the doctor came, took a peek and yup, there was a bead and it was pretty far up there. The nurse came to help her find the right suction. Lilly was on the table, Nick and I were holding her hands, the nurse her head while the doctor used the suction to pull the bead down to her nostril. Then tweezers to pull the bead out the rest of the way. Not once did Lilly cry. Not once did Lilly fuss. Not once did Lilly squirm. She was the ultimate patient.
We promised her some Frozen and ice cream after dinner for being such a good patient. The nurse gave her not one, but two stickers. And we had many conversations about how nothing goes in our noses or ears. Nothing.
Not exactly what we had planned for our Friday night after a long week, but such is life with kids!
