Strep Throat!

Well, maybe.  I got a phone call on Monday from Lilly's day care, Lilly had a fever and needed to be picked up.  I called Nick and worked on finding a sub for the afternoon (my schedule this year is morning heavy, so I really only needed coverage for one class) but Nick decided he could cancel his classes and stay home that day.  He brought her into the doctor after her nap (on the floor, in front of the TV - that was one sick girl!) and the doctor said it was probably a virus but if other symptoms showed up, the fever didn't go away to bring her back.

Tuesday Nick stayed home with her - he doesn't teach classes or lab, just has students doing research. The poor girl spent most of the day zoned out, watching movies and not doing anything.  I brought her to the doctor that afternoon and the girl was amazing.  Lilly just stepped right on the scale (and jumped off), opened wide for the doctor to look in her throat - and most impressive at all - did not cry when the doctor stuck the giant Q-tip in her mouth to swab at her throat.  The five minute test came back negative but after looking in her throat again, the doctor decided to prescribe antibiotic because Lilly had speckles on her soft palette that only show up with strep.  The 24-hour test was also negative, but these tests are pretty inconclusive and are only accurate about 70% of the time, so the doctor said because of the other symptoms, to keep her on the antibiotic.

Since Lilly did so well at the doctor and we wanted to give Walgreens some time to get her prescription ready, I took her to McDonald's for dinner.  We just went through the drive-thru.  This is probably her second time in her life eating fast food - and she ate two fries and started to cry because her throat hurt.

We came home and the girl just crashed hard.  She wouldn't eat any of her food and even drinking water hurt her throat.

Finally got her to eat some ice cream - and she
didn't even eat very much of it!
Wednesday I stayed home with Lilly and in the morning things seemed to be better.  She played with Play-Doh and played dress up.

We made monkey claws for the monkey outfit.
But she crashed hard again, no fever but very lethargic, moody, and would cry when she would try to eat anything.  So late that afternoon we decided Nick would stay home with her on Thursday.  Then six o'clock rolled around and it was starting to seem like we had our Lilly back.  She was happier, more playful and seemed to be eating pretty well.  Shoot - was she well enough to go back to day care?  We decided it was best to play it safe, Nick had already cancelled lab (I am sure his organic students were really disappointed - although they did get 30 pages to read instead . . . ), and make sure she had really kicked the bug before spreading the fun to others.

Thursday Nick and Lilly had a fun day together.  She was pretty much back to normal but they still took it pretty easy, watching a movie and playing quieter games.  When I got home from work the two of them were playing in the sandbox.

Friday Lilly went back to day care and had a great day.  We jokingly told her to get her money's worth since it was the only day she was there the entire time!  Theresa said, "We've got our Lilly back!"  We played chase in the backyard, rode her bike and trike, and helped Nick put the pedals on his bike.  It is so great to have her back!  She has never been so sick, it was really hard to see her feeling like that.
