Um . . . Duh.

I mentioned in an earlier post that I am training for an upcoming 10K training workshop/class/thingamajig.  What I failed to mention is that I have been completely moronic about my training.  We live roughly eight blocks from Lake Superior.  There is a trail that goes along the waterfront.  I've been running on the part of the trail that goes through . . . well, town.

In my defense, much of the trail was closed last year due to the demolition of the ore dock, and much of the trail this year is closed due to the Superfund site and the construction of a hotel/outdoor rec store.  But since I had to run in the heat yesterday, I thought, hey, I should run by the lake.  During the walking portions of my run I snapped a few photos.  Running by the lake certainly made it much more pleasurable.  Until I had to run uphill toward home, that is.

This is all that is left of the ore dock.

I was going to post an old photo of the original ore dock but I didn't transfer all the photos from our old computer to the new one ages ago when we got it.  Maybe tomorrow when I go to Nick's office to steal other photos from it I'll post one, I have a neat one taken from our kayak.

Anyway, the ore dock was deemed an unsafe structure after the I-35W bridge collapse and has been a contentious fight between the Canadian railroad company that owns the ore dock and the city of Ashland.  This is the first of many unused ore docks to be torn down, so how it happens here is probably going to set precedent for how it will be done elsewhere.  We're hoping it gets turned into a pier that people can walk out on, fish off of, maybe someone will have a burrito cart . . .
