Miscellaneous

I am quite tired, today we did testing in the morning with our 9th graders and then had a whirl-wind afternoon of 20-minute classes to start a new semester.  Starting a new semester on a Wednesday?  Well, we were supposed to start on Monday but incredibly frigid temperatures and strong winds again kept us home Monday and Tuesday.  We've had 5.5 cold/snow days so far this year.  At this rate I'll still be teaching come July, because if you haven't looked at your calendar recently, it is not even February yet.  Last year we were still getting snow in May.

Rather than do any school work tonight (since I spent my two cold days doing school work) I thought I'd post some pictures from the last little bit that haven't made it on the blog.

Bust Dust

Here Lilly is using the dust buster, or as she likes to say, bust dust.

A recent development in Lilly's art world is coloring inside the lines.  We haven't mentioned this at all, and were amused watching her.  She came home from Tree Top with a book full of coloring pages that she colored in, so perhaps that is where she developed the concept for coloring in the lines.  My favorite is the focus she puts in and colors inside the lines for a few seconds and then scribbles all over the page.

We are super fortunate to have a girl who loves to read.  Each night we probably read for forty minutes before bed.  Some while downstairs having a bedtime snack and more upstairs.  On Saturday Lilly found our clothes hamper and was sitting inside it, looking at Kevin Henkes books.  I tried to snap a picture of her in the hamper but it didn't turn out.  On Sunday she climbed into the diaper box, grabbed a pillow, had me cover her with a blanket and she did more reading.

Speaking of reading, Lilly can recognize (I won't call it reading yet) her own name and - you guessed it, hockey.

Here are photos of Nick and Lilly watching "hootball," the last Packer game of the season.  Lilly only gets to watch TV when we go out to eat and there are games on the big TVs.  This night was a special occasion.  One, we wanted to catch a little bit of the game.  Two, so was completely and utterly wired, we needed to wash her hair, and could not get her to calm down.  I asked her if she wanted to watch football, her response was, "hat?  jacket?  shoes?"  She thought we were going to go out to a football game.  But, we plugged her in front of the TV for a few minutes, then washed her hair, and then let her have a few M and Ms and a few more minutes of football.  (She got that great monkey pillow from Uncle Ben and his family for Christmas.  When it first came out of the box she said, "bye bye" and asked to play in the other room.  Now, she loves it.  My favorite is when she has monkey wear her bike helmet.)

Speaking of hair washing . . . Lilly has taken three baths without crying or fussing.  We've done the bin in the kitchen method and it has been working really well (knock on wood).  It worked so well in fact the first day we had to set a TIMER to get the girl out of the tub.  Our guess is she was in the water for at least forty minutes.  It still took the M and M bribery to get her in (and to get her out) but once she was in and sitting down, she had a blast.  So hopefully these memories will overpower whatever it was that was keeping her out of the tub before.  A few nights later I asked her if she remembered how much fun the bath was and she started taking her clothes off right then and there, wanting another one.  So I obliged.  Nick was amused when he came home from work to find his daughter splashing around naked in the kitchen.

Little Miss Fix-It - My parents got Lilly her own little tool belt and tools for Christmas.  She is really into the hammer and the slide gets "fixed" quite often.  I really like it when she wears the construction worker hat as well.

Continuing with the Christmas gift photos, here is Lilly playing with the tea set Uncle Matt #2 got for her, which until just a few weeks ago we played with every day.  Unfortunately she doesn't want to just pretend there is "tea" in the tea pot and cups, we have to use water.  Which means more laundry but she has fun and is getting closer to figuring out when to stop filling a cup with water!  (She also knows that Nick drinks coffee and I drink tea.)

Uncle Matt #1 and Aunt Mandy got Lilly paints for Christmas that also get used quite frequently.  Last night they were used to paint her legs . . . Here are a few photos from right around Christmas when she first started painting with the paints at home.

And finally, I talk about it all the time on the blog, Lilly's hockey obsession.  Here she is playing with the hockey set my cousin Phil and his family got Lilly for Christmas.  Once again, something that gets played with quite frequently.  Tonight when we were up in her room reading books before bed she asked repeatedly to come back downstairs to play hockey.

Every time we play, Lilly has to be the "Bweue" hockey stick and whoever she's playing against is "rem" (red).  She's starting to actually play more and more, when we first started playing, she'd divvy out the sticks and then watch Nick and me play.  If you ask Lilly what a goalie does, she'll tell you save.  A forward?  Score!  A Zamboni?  Clean!

Now I think it is time for a bowl of ice cream and to do some reading for school (I know, I said I wasn't going to do school work tonight but reading only sort of counts).  Luckily it is a good book and I just watched the movie yesterday.  I start teaching it either Friday or Monday (depending on how far we get in my class tomorrow - a fun class where we read novels, watch the film and analyze the two) so I should probably know what excerpts I'm going to have the students read.  (All the other books we read the entire novel, but The Maltese Falcon we are just reading a few chapters to get the gist of the character development).  Stay warm!
