Halloween 2013

It is Halloween, my brother's birthday (Happy Birthday, Matt!) and we have a twenty-month old.  How exactly do we celebrate the holiday with a girl who we only allow to eat tiny bits of candy, can't say "trick-or-treat" and doesn't really have any concept of the holiday - but loves to get dressed up?  We put on a costume, take her to a few friends' houses, go and check out the craziness that is Chapple Ave, and then head back home.

On Monday we tried carving a pumpkin.  We thought she'd like it since she is obsessed with pumpkins (ba-bu) but nope.  As soon as I took the top off, she started saying, "all dooo" and tried putting the seeds back in the pumpkin and the top back on.  So we stopped.  Maybe next year!

They had a big Halloween party at day care today, it would have been fun to see all the kids in their costumes and watch the fun there.  Lilly came home with her own treat bag and a painting of ghosts that she made with her footprints.  Nick and I are looking forward to the days when she can tell us more what she did in her day.  (Right now we ask her what she did at Tree Top and she usually says, "All-maa," the name of one of the other girls there).

Last year we ran into my cousin Abby and her family on Chapple Ave.  Crazy enough - it happened again this year!  Chapple Ave is the place where everyone goes to trick-or-treat.  The police block off the street and the people who live there just stand on their front sidewalks, most of them in costume, and hand out candy.  We've heard rumors that people on Chapple spend upwards of $300 on candy.

We ran into some other friends of ours and their kids (Alma actually).  Then we went to a few other friends' houses and headed home to a crabby dinner - until we pulled out the leftover Mac and Cheese and homemade pickles.

Here are some photos of Lilly in her hand-me-down Dalmatian costume (thank you Ben and Becky for the great costumes!) and sunglasses.  She wouldn't let us take the sunglasses off when we headed out.  That's our girl - sporting sunglasses on a misty, foggy night.

Oh - we were trying to get Lilly to say "trick-or-treat" as we were getting ready to leave.  All she would say is her version of "haunted trail."
