Traveling Weekend and Smarty Pants

We had a weekend full of travel.  Friday night we headed down/over to Eagle River, WI to spend the night at Nick's Uncle Dan's cabin.  After a full week at day care, we thought for sure she'd sleep in the car.  Nope.  Eagle River is about two hours from Ashland and Lilly was awake the entire drive.  She didn't talk, cry or make any sound.  Just sat in her car seat and looked out the window.  We left a little after seven and didn't get there until after nine and wasn't showing any signs of fatigue.

Lilly watched Uncle Dan play fetch with Max, applauding every time the dog ran after the ball.  When I brought her inside she started to cry because she wanted to watch the dog play fetch some more.  We brought her into the room, read a few stories, put her in her pack and play and she went right to sleep.  For the most part she slept through the night, Nick had to go in at 3:30 to rub her back but came right back to bed.

On Saturday we hung out at the cabin in the morning (of course, Lilly played with the dog all morning), Nick went for a bike ride, and then hit the road at 11:45 to go to Manitowoc, WI to visit Jon and Saskia and their baby Julian.  Jon and Nick were best friends in elementary school.  Jon is one of those perfect friends who each time we see him, we pick up right where we left off, no awkwardness or anything.  They currently live in the Democratic Republic of Congo but came back to have a baby.  A trip across the state to Manitowoc is much shorter than a trip to DRC, so we of course headed down.  The drive is about 3.5 hours from Eagle River.  After Friday night, we had no idea what to expect from Lilly in terms of sleeping in the car.  She was eating a blueberry bagel and cream cheese and her eyes were quickly closing.  The last few bites of bagel happened and the girl was out.  Unfortunately she only slept for about 50 minutes and then was up and not thrilled to be in her car seat for the rest of the drive.  That isn't to say she was crying and throwing all sorts of fits - rather she just needed constant entertainment with toys and books.  I should have taken a picture when we stopped to get gas - we opened the door of the mini-van (that's right folks - we are proud owners of a 2004 Toyota Sienna Mini-Van with 215,000 miles on it) - and a cascade of toys fell out of the car.

We met Jon, Saskia, Julian, Nick's parents and a handful of other people at Saskia's sister's house.  Dinner was an amazing spread of grilled veggies, corn, veggie burgers, meat and delicious desserts.   We caught up, played with Lilly on the amazing swing set and ate fabulous food.

At 8:00 we put Lilly's PJs on, put toys back in the center of the van for me to hand over and crossed our fingers that this time the girl would sleep.  We figured the fact that she was in constant movement from the moment we got to their place until we put her in the car seat should help her wear out.  Again it was just a few minutes before she fell asleep in the car.  I had hopes that she'd sleep until Eagle River but she only slept for about two hours.  The last hour and a half she did great, playing with stickers and looking at books (Nick can drive with a light on in the back of the van, which was really helpful).

We pulled into the driveway at the cabin at 11:35 and Lilly asked about the dog as soon as we got to the door.  Lilly and I read a few stories, and then I put her down in her pack and play and she fell asleep and slept until we woke her up at 8:15.  Then we packed up, cleaned up our mess at the cabin and drove the two hours back to Ashland.  She did a fantastic job once again, this time not creating quite the cascade of toys.  Lilly took a two hour nap back in her own bed, and we played and took turns getting dinner made, errands run, etc.  One of the things we did to entertain her this afternoon was take the following two videos.  Enjoy and have a great week!
