Memorial Day Weekend

Nick is trapped in Ashland every Memorial Day Weekend for Northland College's graduation.  One of the perks of being a professor!  There were two extra bonuses this year: graduation was on his birthday and he was a member of the "platform party," which meant he sat on the stage.  The perks of the platform party included: unlimited leg room, a comfier chair, a bottle of water, and he did get to shake every graduate's hand.  At first he thought of all the germs but when he did get to congratulate many of his students, the germ concern took a backseat.

My grandma and aunt had not seen Lilly since Christmas and were eager to see her again.  My assumption is they were looking forward to seeing us as well, but we know who the real driving force of the visit was.  My parents came up on Friday night, my grandma, aunt and cousin Eric on Saturday mid-afternoon.

What did we do with all the company?  Had them play with Lilly while we worked!  I spent Saturday morning while Nick was at graduation grading the last of my research papers while my mom played with Lilly, my dad mowed our lawn and played 18 holes of golf.   After celebrating the completion of the research papers, I dove into other work around the house.

I'm struggling to remember what we did in the afternoon when my extended family arrived, but I am sure it was outside and I am sure Lilly had fun.  We had delicious real and fake sloppy joes for dinner and spice cake to celebrate Nick's birthday.

Sunday was spent playing at our house in the morning.  When it was Lilly's nap time my mom, grandma, aunt and cousin took a shopping trip up to Bayfield.  During this time my dad and Nick began tearing off the planks of the deck to rebuild the deck.

The yucky deck

Lilly loves drawing on the sidewalk with chalk.  By drawing I mean putting lines on the sidewalk.

My aunt really wanted to hold Lilly, but she wasn't really interested.  Until she saw my aunt's sweatshirt strings, then she had no trouble letting Julie hold her.

The last time my aunt and grandma came to visit, we did four generation photos on the deck:

Lilly clearly was not happy at this moment in time.

This year, since the deck was torn up and only partially re-decked, we went to the front.

Lilly was much happier this go around:

Lilly enjoyed watching the guys work on the deck:

There is a children's book character, Lilly, who has a purple
plastic purse and purple sunglasses.  My mom brought the props
she used when reading the story while teaching for Lilly.

Here are a few that I posted in an earlier post, but since they were during this weekend, I thought I'd post them again.

We went to the park next to Lake Superior.  Lilly went down slides and my grandma
swung on the swings.

Monday before they left, my dad took some pictures of Lilly in her high chair.
Thank you to my family for making the trip up and helping out.  Finished pictures of the deck to come soon!
