An alternate title for this post could be "Why I Don't Like Keyless Entry."
When I carried Lilly to the car from daycare yesterday, she was playing with my keys. I stuck her in the backseat, then shut the door to avoid the car coming down the road and to move to the other side for easier access to her. What does our little tyke who loves to push any and all buttons do? Yup, locks the car and then drops the keys on the other side of her car seat. I quickly check to make sure that she has indeed locked up the entire car and yes, she has. I take my cell phone out of my pocket and call Nick. Luckily we have a system for calling when one of us needs the other person to answer, where we call once, hang up, and then call right back. After waiting for what it seemed like hours for Nick to answer the phone the second time (he was in a meeting and needed to get out of the room before answering), I explained what had happened, he borrows someone else's car (thank you Katie!) and comes and saves the day. Meanwhile, Lilly is having the time of her life in the back seat. She jumped around and looked out the back window. Standing in her car seat she turned and faced the front (an opportunity she does not have yet) and rocked her car seat - basically laughed, babbled and bounced Generally she had a grand ol' time. I wasn't panicked or worried, I knew Nick would come with keys soon and since she was having so much fun, terrible things that could happen didn't even cross my mind. Nick's mind on the other hand rushed to all the unfortunate and horrible things that could happen to her, including pinching her fingers in something or falling into the footwells and not being able to get back out.
Of course I shared this story with colleagues today, both because it is entertaining and because I needed to hear that I wasn't a terrible parent and they had similar stories. And similar stories they did. So many parents had stories of their children locking themselves or siblings in the car even scarier stories of kids managing to drive the car!
Parenthood and teaching - there is no predicting what will happen in a day with these two jobs!
Did mom ever tell you the story of how she locked the keys in the car once when she was pregnant with me and had to call dad, who came in the pouring rain - only to find that the other side was unlocked?
